Play Our Tunes

Play Our Tunes is a worldwide music project led by Helge Ankers Institute of Music (HAM), in close collaboration with MakeMusic (MM), Molto Musica (MoMu) and similar organisations working with music and music education.

The main goal of Play Our Tunes is to bring out the joy of playing an instrument in children and young people, and to recruit more young musicians. We will use our own songs to strengthen our identity and build on the good values in our songs.

About the concept

Play Our Tunes is a sister concept to Sing Our Songs. It will offer children and young people the motivation and tools to learn an instrument. We hope to achieve this through:

  • regular competitions (“challenges”)
  • participation in performances for bands/orchestras in the local churches
  • participation in an international youth orchestra at Brunstad

Our own songs will form the foundation. Children and young people should have fun playing these songs so that they mean something to them. This will hopefully create bonds, valuable experiences and memories that will stay with them for a lifetime.

A key part of this project is the launch of a new Play Our Tunes website, which will primarily function as an accessible and user-friendly archive for sheet music and backing tracks. Alongside this use, the website will serve as a learning platform where young people can find practice material for songs at varying difficulty levels, as well as “tutorials” for different instruments and music theory and training exercises.

The mentor model

The concept is based on a ‘mentor model’ where each student has their own mentor who follows up with them. A mentor should motivate and help their student with their learning by using resources provided by Play Our Tunes, as well as other textbooks and educational resources. The best scenario is 1:1 follow-up if possible. In addition to these mentors, there will need to be a POT contact person in each church, whose task it is to find mentors and support them in their work.

There are already several existing music schools across the globe, such as the Make Music organisations in Norway and Molto Musica in Germany. In these places, the Play Our Tunes – project will be an additional resource for the ongoing music education. Naturally, the music teachers will automatically adopt the ‘mentor’ roles and the person administrating the music school will be the Play Our Tunes – contact person.

Where there is no existing music school, former HAM students or other enthusiasts will become mentors and contact people.
